Menkumham Invites Business Actors Working Together with the Government to Combat Human Trafficking

Sanur – Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham), Yasonna H. Laoly, invited business actors to collaborate with the government to combat human trafficking. This was conveyed by Menkumham when giving a speech at the Government and Business Forum (GABF) at the Hyatt Regency Sanur, Bali, Thursday (10/08/2023). "Human trafficking related to online fraud has become a major problem. For this reason, I invite young business people to work together with the government to combat human trafficking," said Yasonna to young technopreneurs participated in the GABF. The minister further said that the many unethical business practices have encouraged Indonesia to form a task force in preventing and handling human trafficking. The government has made various efforts to combat human trafficking. "At the bilateral levels, we have some agreements with foreign countries on mutual assistance, extradition, and legal cooperation," he continued. At the end of his speech, the minister conveyed the importance of using technology to prevent transnational crime. On the other hand, advanced technology increases transnational crime because of its global reach. Indonesia is also committed to creating a conducive environment for foreign investors, supported by legal reforms to improve the ease of doing business in Indonesia. "We must also be able to utilize advanced technology to counter transnational crime. Promoting cooperation through digital technology, and social media platforms to combat human trafficking is an effective way. We must establish practical tools and guidelines and share best practices under GABF engagement with other stakeholders," said Yasonna. The GABF is a joint forum initiated by Australia and Indonesia, which began with the emergence of many cases of human trafficking, where the private sector has a significant role in combating Trafficking in Persons (TIP). Also attending the GABF activity this time, the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno.L.P. Marsudi (Co-Chair of the Bali Process Indonesia), Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong (Co-Chair of the Bali Process Australia) who attended online, Garibaldi Thohir (Co-Chair of GABF Indonesia), Andrew Forest (Co-Chair of GABF Australia), business people, representatives of ministries/institutions, activists, celebrities and several representatives of member countries.
